In the annals of Kentucky high school basketball history, sustained regional dominance is rare. Capturing a region championship requires consistency, talent, and the ability to peak at the right moment year after year. What Ashland Blazer High School has accomplished over the past seven seasons stands among the most impressive runs the state has ever witnessed.
Since 2019, the Tomcats have claimed seven consecutive 16th Region championships, a streak that has placed them in rarefied air. Only two other programs in Kentucky history have matched this feat: Clay County, who won seven straight from 1984 to 1990 and captured a state title in 1987, and St. Xavier, who dominated from 1937 to 1943. Ironically, St. X had won a state championship two years before their streak began in 1935, adding context to their historic run of regional dominance.
Now, Ashland Blazer stands on the precipice of something no Kentucky high school basketball team has ever achieved: an eighth consecutive region championship.
The irony of Ashland’s dominance isn’t lost on those who follow Kentucky basketball closely. While the Tomcats have been virtually untouchable in the 16th Region for seven years, they haven’t won a state championship since 1961—over six decades ago. This stands in contrast to the previous programs that achieved seven-peat status, both of which captured state titles during or near their runs.
The question lingers: Is Ashland simply that much better than everyone else in their region, or does the 16th Region lack the competitive depth found elsewhere in the state? Geography may play a role. Ashland benefits from being part of the Huntington-Ashland Metropolitan Area, which boasts a population of over 350,000 people—a significant advantage when compared to the surrounding counties in the 16th Region, many of which have populations under 20,000. This population disparity could provide Ashland with a larger talent pool and more robust youth development programs.
Regardless of the underlying factors, what Coach Ryan Bonner has built at Ashland Blazer demands respect. Sustaining excellence for seven consecutive seasons requires more than talent, it requires culture, leadership, and the ability to reload rather than rebuild.
Chasing History
The 2025-26 Tomcats appear poised to make their historic bid. Through eight games, Ashland sits at 7-1 overall and is ranked 15th in the state according to KSR’s Top 25 Rankings from Week 3. Perhaps most importantly, they’ve already secured a decisive victory over their primary rival, Boyd County, in both region and district play.
Boyd County, led by Coach Anderson and star player Jacob Spurlock, has been knocking on the door for years. Spurlock, one of the region’s most talented players, represents Boyd County’s best hope to end Ashland’s stranglehold on the 16th Region. But after falling short once again in their head-to-head matchup, the question remains: Can the Lions, or any other team in the region, find a way to topple the Tomcats when it matters most?
As the season progresses, all eyes in the 16th Region will be on Ashland. The Tomcats have the experience, the coaching, and, based on early results, the talent to reach that eighth consecutive region title. But tournament basketball is unpredictable, and one off night can derail even the most dominant program.
What’s perhaps most concerning for the rest of the 16th Region is that Ashland has landed some young talent as well in freshman guard Alijah Owens. If the Tomcats can secure their eighth consecutive title this season, it might just be the beginning of another four-plus year streak that would crush the previous record of seven. The dynasty may be far from over.
Boyd County will undoubtedly be hungry for revenge come tournament time. Other programs in the region may sense an opportunity to make history by being the team that finally ends the streak. And while Ashland’s regular season success is impressive, they’ll need to prove once again that they can handle the pressure when the stakes are highest.
One thing is certain: Kentucky high school basketball fans should be paying attention. Whether Ashland Blazer makes history or whether someone finally breaks through, the 16th Region tournament promises to be must-watch basketball. The Tomcats have dominated for seven years, now the question is whether they have what it takes to make it eight.
